So yeah, I made it to India! I landed in New Delhi last night but I didn’t have access to Internet until today so I’m doing this update now. The plane ride wasn’t that bad, I mostly slept through the flight from SFO to Newark, when I wasn’t sleeping I was watching Star Trek from the guy next to me. But the trip from Newark to New Delhi wasn’t as peaceful. I tried to get some sleep but there was a family with a crying baby next to us, so I spent all night watching movies until the baby finally went to sleep.
We arrived at about 9:20 PM and were picked up by some of my grandfather’s friends. As soon as I stepped out of the airport I could feel the intense heat and mustiness of India. Everywhere we went, they had fans but the fans would just spin the hot air in circles. The drive through downtown New Delhi was quite shocking.
For one thing, everyone drives on the left side of the road and that continues to throw me off and scare me whenever we turn. Another thing that really surprised me was how broken down some parts of the road and general infrastructure was. There was quite a lot of poverty and that didn’t surprise me as much as it made me feel sad for them, strengthening my resolve for this project. I noticed a lot of dogs walking around the streets, none of them seemed to have owners, but the dogs were smart enough to look both ways before crossing the street. I’ve had quite a good time so far here, and I’ll continue to update this blog every day or two.
